Pressing isn't new, but the way top teams use it keeps evolving.

What is a high press?

A high press means trying to win the ball back close to the opponent's goal, rather than dropping back and waiting. Win it high, and you're only a pass or two from a chance.

The triggers

Good pressing teams don't just run at the ball. They press on triggers: a bad touch, a pass back to the goalkeeper, or a player receiving with their back to goal.

The risks

  • If the first line is bypassed, the defence can be exposed.
  • It demands high fitness — tired legs mean gaps.
  • A single long ball over the top can undo the whole plan.

Why it's back

Better fitness data, deeper squads and the five-substitute rule make it easier to keep intensity high for 90 minutes. Expect to see more of it.
