Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, have made history by winning the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco after defeating Japan 2-1 in a thrilling final.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered a memorable performance at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Saturday, November 7, 2026, to claim their first-ever title in the competition and become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

Midfielder Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a powerful effort to give Nigeria a deserved first-half advantage.

The Flamingos continued their impressive display after the break, with Oluebube Umejiaku doubling Nigeria's lead in the 47th minute to put the West Africans firmly in control.

Japan fought back into the contest through Fuki Ito, who pulled one goal back in the 80th minute, but Nigeria held on until the final whistle to secure a historic 2-1 victory.

The triumph represents a remarkable achievement for the Flamingos, who had previously reached the semi-finals in 2022, where they finished third.

Their journey to the title also featured an impressive 3-1 semi-final victory over Brazil, with Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru inspiring the team to their first-ever appearance in the final.

Under the guidance of head coach Akeem Busari, the young Nigerian stars have demonstrated determination, resilience, teamwork and exceptional fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

This historic achievement is not just a victory for Nigeria but a proud moment for African women's football, as the Flamingos have placed the continent on top of the global stage.

Nigeria are world champions! The future of women's football is bright!

Congratulations to the Flamingos! 🇳🇬🏆
