SAMSON ADAMU BEGINS FIRST ASSIGNMENT AS CAF GENERAL SECRETARY ARRIVES IN UGANDA
By Oyeboade Emmanuel Emmzysports
Newly confirmed Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Secretary, Samson Adamu, has arrived in Uganda for his first official assignment since his confirmation as the substantive head of CAF's administration.
Adamu, accompanied by a delegation of CAF officials, is in the East African country to inspect facilities and assess preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
The visit is expected to include high-level meetings and inspections aimed at evaluating the readiness of facilities and other arrangements ahead of the continental showpiece. The assignment marks an important first step in Adamu's new role as he takes on greater administrative responsibilities within African football's governing body.
A HISTORIC MILESTONE FOR NIGERIA
Adamu's appointment represents a historic achievement for Nigeria, as he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the substantive position of CAF General Secretary since the organisation was established in 1957.
His confirmation, announced on October 29, 2026, followed months of service in an acting capacity after the departure of his predecessor, Véron Mosengo-Omba.
The appointment recognises Adamu's experience in football administration and his previous contributions to the organisation and delivery of major football competitions across Africa.
SAMSON ADAMU'S ANTECEDENTS AND CAREER JOURNEY
Samson Adamu is a Nigerian football administrator with a professional background in sports management, tournament organisation and football governance.
Before joining CAF, he gained experience in sports marketing and event management, including his involvement with Kinetic Sport Management. He also played a significant role in the development and organisation of Copa Lagos, an international beach soccer tournament that attracted teams and attention to Nigeria.
His work in sports event management helped establish his credentials in the industry and opened the door to greater responsibilities in football administration.
Adamu subsequently joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions. He later served as Director of Tournaments and Events, where he was involved in coordinating and delivering major continental competitions.
These responsibilities gave him valuable experience in tournament planning, operational coordination and engagement with football stakeholders across the continent.
Academically, Adamu studied Business Management and Computer Science at the American University of Paris. He also completed the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport in 2009, further strengthening his knowledge of sports administration and governance.
FROM ACTING GENERAL SECRETARY TO SUBSTANTIVE APPOINTMENT
Adamu's rise to the top administrative position at CAF began on March 29, 2026, when he was appointed Acting General Secretary following Mosengo-Omba's departure.
During his time in the acting role, he assumed responsibility for the organisation's administrative operations while the process of confirming a substantive officeholder continued.
His eventual confirmation represents the culmination of that transition and places him in charge of an office central to CAF's daily operations, the implementation of Executive Committee decisions and coordination with the organisation's 54 member associations.
A MAJOR TEST AHEAD
Adamu's first assignment in Uganda comes at a crucial stage in preparations for the 2027 AFCON.
With Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania preparing to co-host the competition, effective coordination, infrastructure readiness and operational planning will be essential to delivering a successful tournament.
His experience in competitions and events management could prove valuable as CAF continues to monitor preparations and work with the host countries.
For Nigeria, his appointment is a source of national pride. For African football, however, the greater measure of his success will be his ability to strengthen CAF's administration, support its member associations and contribute to the continued development of the game across the continent.
As Samson Adamu begins this new chapter, attention will turn to how he translates his years of experience into effective leadership at one of African football's most influential administrative offices.
